About Department

The Department of Philosophy was established in 1961 with the introduction of the B.A. General Course. The B.A. Honours was established in 1966. It offers undergraduate course. From the 2014-2015 academic year onwards, a six-semester system was implemented. Rajat Bhattacharjee (The University of Burdwan), Prof. Dilip Kumar Mohanta (Kolkata University), Indrani Chakraborty (Ramthakur College) and Dr. Krishna Bhattacharjee (Retired HOD of TU), Md. Kutub Ali (Retired SDM), Anil Kumar Sinha, Dr. Anupam Mallik are among the notable students of this college who have served/ have been serving at various universities or important offices across the country.

Achievements of faculty as well as students & dept.:

Reba Malakar, a student from the 2015 batch, received a Gold medal for obtaining the maximum grade in philosophy at graduation level.
Priya Das from 6th sem. (Honours) 2021-22, obtained Gold Medal for scoring highest marks in the graduation level.

Strength, Weakness, Opportunities & Treat analysis (SWOT) of the dept.

Since its inception until a few years ago, many students have taken enrollment each year. However, due to lower enrollment in feeder schools, there has recently been a decrease in student enrollment. Despite the fact that the number of students is small, we do our best to help them to enhance their philosophical thinking skills. Philosophical thinking entails using argumentative reasoning to solve problems that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

1. In 2020, ICPR periodical lecture was organised by Jaharlal Debbarma, Assistant Professor.

2. In 2014, World Philosophy Day, sponsored by ICPR was organised by Mithan Das. Assistant Professor.

3. Research Projects: Social Justice: A Comparative Analysis of Ambedkar and John Rawls, Sponsored by ICPR, is being carried by Mithan Das.

4. Department of Philosophy organised “Online Webinar Periodic Lecture: 2021”, on 24th and 25th January, 2022 sponsored by ICPR.

5. Department of Philosophy in collaboration with IQAC and Physical Education Department organized “Celebration and Observance of the 8th International Yoga Day-22.” on 30th June 2022 sponsored by ICPR
